Audience, Purpose, and Genre (In-class, 4/5)

Creating effective and powerful rhetoric is all about hitting the right notes with audience, purpose, and genre. Whenever you're writing (or creating anything) think about these questions:

1. Who is my audience? What is this audience going to want and need from my writing? What are their values and assumptions?
2. What's the purpose? Don't fall into the "to get a good grade" or "to complete this assignment" trap. Instead think about what this piece of rhetoric would do if you were doing this on your own. Ask, "what am I trying to accomplish in this paper? What do I want my readers to know, believe, see, or do?"
3. What is the genre? What are the things I need to do to fit into the conventions of this genre? What are its requirements for structure, style and document design?
