Defining Sustainability

Imagine that you've been commissioned to write a dictionary and you're working on the definition of sustainability or sustainable. How would *you* define these words?

What do you think of when you hear the word sustainability? In your mind, who/what type of people care about sustainability? Do you do anything you consider to be sustainable? Get specific and creative.

(You have about ten minutes to write; respond as a comment below.)

  1. I would define these words as a continual objective for, social, economical, and environment life, etc, that is needed to be completed, cared for and re-evaluated continuously to be able to function correctly and or at all. Institutions at all levels are set up and are responsible for this process, such as government, schooling, social gathering areas, etc.

  2. If I had to try my best to define sustainability for a dictionary it would look as follows;
Sustainability- The action of not only maintaining but also planing for the future in the attempts to keep an object or thing running in the long term.

When I think of sustainability I think of something that is going to prosper for a long period of time or even indefinitely. I feel as though polition's often times use the word sustainability to talk about long term goals for the country. I think everyone does things that are considered sustainable actions. For instance just drinking water and eating food or breathing air are all actions I do on a daily basis to sustain my life. Even the relationships I have with other people everyday need to constantly grow and be maintained through communication in order to be sustained and prosper.

  3. Sustainability makes me think of something that can be built up or supported. This could be anything like maintaining a healthy environment or a good economy. When thinking of people who care about sustainability I think of activists; people fighting for animal rights or women's rights, etc. Basically, people fighting for a cause. Personally, I care about sustaining a good environment. At my house, we recycle pretty much anything we can. Next month I will be volunteering at Beautification Day for Athens, to try and sustain a clean campus. Also, I try to sustain good health, by working out and staying active in intramural sports. Even grades could be sustainable, I work to build up and maintain a high GPA.

  4. If I had to define sustainability, I would define it as that property of an action or a way of life that allows it to be continually performed with no outside force or action to keep it going. To me something is sustainable if at the end of the day, the pros and cons of the action or lifestyle in question even out or the pros simply outweigh the cons. Just it does not make sense for a person to continually live in debt, one's lifestyle must be sustainable.

However, sustainability is a much greater issue. Some have argued over the ages that evil isn't sustainable and that it only exists at the mercy or out of the sympathy of the good. Just as a lie must have some truth to it to be believable, I think that a good measure of what is good or right could be to consider if such an action could be sustainable over time.

When I hear the word sustainability, the first thing I think of is environmentalism. I realize that sustainability is a much more encompassing issue than simply environmental issues but environmentalism is the first thing that comes to mind. It seems to be the word of the day for politicians and corporations alike.

Our current national debt is a big issue that is tied in with sustainability. We as a nation are running on debt using a currency that has on real or objective value to back it up. It is because of this flawed system that the real objective value of the copper and zinc in a penny is worth more than the one cent a penny is worth.

Something I do that I consider to be sustainable is stay out of debt. It is a hard thing to do but it is something I feel strongly about. I feel that it is because our current economic system allows people and in fact encourages people to operate in debt that we now have such a great national crisis.

  5. To me the word sustainability means to stay in the same current state without change or to continue to do a certain action. In a sustainable world there would be very little change for the good or bad. When I hear the word sustainability I think of something that has been around for a long time. I believe that people who care about sustainability would be farmers who have to continue to grow crops each and every day. They continue to live a life that is free of change and is very similar day to day. I would also consider professors who teach a history class to be sustainable. An example of something that i do that I consider to be sustainable would be going to school. School has been a part of my life for the last sixteen years and it is always a constant in my life. Continuing to to do something is what comes to my mind when I think about sustainability.

  6. I would define sustainability as the ability to meet the needs of some desired goal and be able to operate at that level for an extended period of time. When I hear the word sustainability it reminds me of companies that have been operating at high levels and who have become well-known, household names. Furthermore, people who are sustainable may be characterized as being dependable, honest, and hardworking in my mind. It is people like this that allow businesses to sustain, or last over a period of time. As of right now I'm not necessarily a sustainable person. I do, however, attend all of my classes and keep to my schedule in that respect, but not much more than that. I have always been loyal to a select number of sports teams as well, and have sustained that loyalty over a number of years and bad seasons.

  7. Sustainability is the ability to achieve a certain level or performance or production over a long period of time. When I think of the word sustainable I think of strong relationships and bonds. The type of people that are sustainable are those who are dependent and trustworthy. I think that most people care about being sustainable because it shows you can be depended on. I exhibit sustainability in relationships with friends. I am always going to act the same and they know that. Another aspect of my life where I have shown sustainability is my loyalty and love of sports. No matter how terrible my hometown teams are, I will always support them and continue to for seasons on. I have sustained an admiration for athletes and sports in general over my entire life, and I don't ever see that changing. Sustainability is a very important characteristic to have.

  8. When asked what sustainable or sustainability means, I would have to lean more towards the environmental definition, which states that the act of being sustainable means utilizing practices that ensure certain materials, foods, or resources can be used by future generations. Sustainability means having a smaller (harmful) impact on the environment by educating yourself on which products to buy, what food to consume, and how to live your life to produce a smaller carbon footprint.

When I hear sustainability, I immediately think food growth, production and transportation as well as natural resources, like oil and fossil fuels. If I had to put a "face" on who cares about sustainability, it would be the people over in Porter hall, who are plant biologists, geologists, and geographers. They understand how our world works in terms of human impact and use, so they would be the most educated on how to be more sustainable. But there are many more people who are learning how to be sustainable in their actions, so this is merely a stereotype.

For myself, I try to be more aware of my purchases: meaning aware of how the food or product was made, where it was made, the amount of "food miles" or energy was put into the transportation of the object, etc. I have been attempting more recycling and composting as well as bringing cloth bags to the supermarket instead of using plastic. This conscious choice I make, specifically about packaging, will reduce the amount of waste in landfills and help create a more sustainable future with (hopefully) less trash and more awareness of how to have a fulfilling life without so much waste.

It's a little crazy, but I also am sustainable with my clothing. Shopping at places like Goodwill or trading clothes between friends always ensures that you have something new to wear, without having to put more energy into fabric production and transportation. Although, every now and then, getting something new from the store is very nice...But even then, being conscious about where I buy my clothes, where they were made and how the workers were treated is becoming something that I want to be more sensitive to, so in the future, I will have to be more active in my consumption and educate myself in many areas to ensure a sustainable future.

  9. When I think of the word sustainability, I think of our environment, our government, and our economy. In my own words I would define sustainability as someone who endures or tries to keep something going. I think all types of people need to care about sustainability. I would say the government would be consider a high ranking of sustainability. I do many things to be considered sustainable. I run my life and keep things going so I can eventually succeed in life. My job is a good example of sustainability, because without the working class people, you can not keep a store or association alive. This would be my definition of sustainability.

  10. Sustainability can be described as the ability to preserve something for a amount of time. Sustain, to me, can mean that you are performing a consistent operation over time. This what I think about when i hear these two words.

I think any type of person can care about these words and use them throughout their daily lives but I'm sure certain people are more involved with finding something 'sustainable' for a certain cause. For instance, baseball General Managers are looking for good pitchers that can sustain their arm strength over the course of a 182 game schedule. CEOs are looking for supervisors and local managers that can consistently 'sustain' the quality image for their product/service, while also 'sustaining' max profit. Sustainability is good term to use when trying to develop or preserve something over a long period of time.

  11. I would define 'sustainability' or 'sustainable' as the ability that something or someone has to remain the same when other factors or influences are changing around it. What I think of when I hear the word 'sustainability' is something that is durable and withstanding. I think a good example of people who care about sustainability would be anyone in a definitive culture. I say that in the sense that people want their culture to remain the same as it's always been in an ever-changing world. For example, certain people would like for American ideals to withstand the test of time, to be sustainable. I don't know if I do anything that I consider to be sustainable because I tend to change my ideas of the world depending on what I am exposed to and depending on how I feel.

  12. What does one think of when they hear the word sustainability? Right off the bat i think of sustainable agriculture. Where one of a group of individuals make and grow their own food for survival. There is no Wal-mart or grocery store to shop at. It's you getting down and dirty making your own food, busting your ass in the hot sun for your right to survive. I guess in a broader sense (the human race as a whole) I would say sustainability is doing whatever it takes to go along with the change that the world is bringing us. I think as it like an ecosystem everything/everyone does their part and keeps the ecosystem alive.

  13. When I think if the word sustainability I like to think about the ability to achieve a goal or goals over a long period of time. I believe the people who care about sustainability are ones who have the greatest chance to succeed in life. Those people who are able to focus on their career goals and will not let anything get int their way. I think to be able to maintain sustainability, you need to be very organized, and have a great amount of self confidence. I think that people who are hiring for jobs and careers are ones who look at sustainability. A corporation or organization will be able to trust you, and I think that is one of the most important things when hiring employees and co-workers. I myself try my best to be sustainable. I like to make goals over a long period of time, and I do my best to try to complete them as much as possible. As a junior now, it's getting more and more closer to the "real world". One of my goals I have had since I have come to college is to graduate in four years, and be hired right out of college. As of now I am on the right track, and I just need to continue to focus on my education. I want to be able to show the people who hire me that I am someone they can depend on. I don't want to be someone who is just there and might be fired in a couple years. I want to find a job that I enjoy doing, and that the people around me enjoy having me work for them.

  14. When I hear the word sustainability the words efficiency and future are the first to come to play in my mind. In my mind sustainability is the practice of living efficiently and consciously, while keeping in mind the needs of future generations. In my eyes the people who are most concerned with the issues concerning sustainability are those who are environmentally and politically geared towards an inclination that blindly wasting and using without the integrity of future generations in mind is making things worse.

I feel I do a few things that I would regard as truly sustainable. I find that recycling and using electronic means of data keeping and writing is sustainable in the way that I am putting to use my waste in a way that it does not harm the integrity of future generations.

  15. Sustainability is a concept that is used to describe how resources are used. Wind, Solar, and maybe nuclear power come to mind when sustainability is said. The act of sustaining a resource for long time used with out that resource having a defined total or negatively impacting the environment. As of right now the majority of energy is from coal which is not sustainable. There is a definite limit to how much coal we have and the health/environment impacts in my opinion greatly outweigh the benefits. This is not just limited to a sustainable energy resource, sustainability can also be used to describe an economic setting. Is the economy sustainable? I can not say if any one thing is completely sustainable but it is something everyone should strive towards. For example plastic bottles are an unsustainable product but we have recycle centers trying to get some sustainability out of plastic.

  16. When I think "sustainability", I think of people. Specifically, two separate and opposing types of people come to mind; raging liberals preaching the good word of "green energy" and reserved climate scientists thinking of ways to save the planet. As is evident by my tone, I sympathize with one of these types of people. The green evangelics, to me, seem to have a knack for succeeding in doing nothing but making others as uncomfortable as possible and, quite ironically, littering buildings and street posts with buzzword-laden propaganda. These people seem to be better at marketing than waste reduction.

On the other hand, sustainability conjures up images of an exciting forefront of technology; one spearheaded by thoughtful considerations of our planet. This approach is not limited to the electric car manufacturers or solar panel installers. Companies such as Blackboard take very small steps at moving us toward a paperless world with online assignments. Breweries such as Dogfish Head constantly reuse and recycle water in their beer brewing processes. I respect these people and make an effort to support their products and services as much as possible. To me, they are leading the movement of "sustainability" just as much as alternative energies and belong on that same front.

  17. To me, sustainability is limiting the amount of resources we waste and attempting to reuse anything we can in order to prevent further destruction of our earth and it resources.

As a member of this society I try to always recycle and avoid using excessive amounts of energy by turning off lights and appliances while i am not using them.

  18. Sustainability is the capacity to endure or support. Therefore, someone or something that is sustainable has the ability to support or maintain itself over an extended period of time. For example, a sustainable business plan would be one that generates money over a long period of time without draining finances.

When I hear the word sustainability, I automatically think of environmental sustainability. This is probably because this is the type of sustainability most covered in the mainstream media. However, the etymology of the word extends much further to include anything or person that has the capacity to endure, support, or maintain itself. I would consider my college education sustainable. For example, by obtaining a college degree, I will in turn (hopefully) obtain a job, which will in turn generate money that will support myself and my family.

  19. Sustainable: Something able to keep going. Something that can last long term. Something that goes beyond the initial stage.

People who are aware of some of the worlds most important problems. That couple with not being lazy. People who care enough to change their lifestyle. Lots of people can say that they care about sustainability but do nothing to show that. It's easy to do nothing. People don't realize how important these things are. They may disagree with deforestation, but do nothing about it. People are too caught up in their frivolous pursuits. Getting that sweet new big screen TV or that awesome new car.

I walk to school when it's cold, ride a bicycle when it's warm. I recycle everything I can.

  20. Sustainability: when something that is able to stay consistent and last for a long period of time.

When I think about the word sustainability I automatically think of things we can change or make different/better for the world around us and for the future. Things we can do to make sure that we will have a future economy or resources to utilize for generations to come. Things that come to mind are things I actually do or could do like recycling, ride a bike, use different light bulbs etc. Even though I know sustainability goes a lot farther and deeper than that. The people I think about who care about sustainability are environmentalists, some politicians, even now a lot of the general public are starting to care more and more about their effet on the earth and what they can do to help.
